LESSONS

"Without music, life would be a mistake." - Friedrich Nietzsche

Success in learning frequently depends on finding the right teacher; someone who knows the subject well and understands how to inspire others. My teaching style focuses on skills training and problem solving but also guides you towards self-exploration with the real possibility of discovering a new passion.

I will cater lessons to your individual needs and can recommended the best material or repertoire, with clear practical advice to put you on the correct path. I have had many students come to me over the years with particular difficulties or problems in their playing and I have been able to quickly diagnose bad habits and oversights, and help steer them back on course. As long as you have the patience, and are mindful in your approach, you might just surprise yourself as to how far you can go.

FROM BEGINNER TO ADVANCED

"Music is a higher revelation than philosophy." - Beethoven

As a well established tutor, I’ve provided the tools and guidance needed to help all of my students excel. I won't coerce you to take any exams if you don't want to do so, but I will also fully support and encourage any students wishing to work their way through the Grades. Exams are a useful way of measuring progress, and the higher Grades have the benefit of providing additional UCAS points. I mainly use LCM and ABRSM exam boards but am flexible to use whatever board you are comfortable with.

I also make sure that students maintain a basic level of theory throughout their lessons. Any students aspiring to get to Grade 8 piano and/or beyond will receive theory training in conjunction with their practical lessons so as to achieve at least a Grade 5 standard. You will find music so much easier to understand when you take some time to learn even the basics of music theory. Because of this, I insist a good theory work ethic is established from as early on as possible. It's not difficult when you realise they are two sides of the same coin. You wouldn't expect to write poetry without knowing what the words mean.
