TESTIMONIALS

"I’ve had many piano teachers over the years but John has been my favourite by far, I’ve had the pleasure of learning from him for over 10 years. John has been able to push me from grade 5 piano to ALCM and has been a constant source of inspiration for me to keep learning piano. If you are looking for an amazing and talented teacher then I would highly recommend John!"

"John is an exceptional teacher who has trained to concert pianist standard by legendary Irish conservatoire teacher Mabel Swainson. It is widely acknowledged, and I have personally found it to be the case, that learning piano helps in other areas of life including confidence, discipline and academia. He has taught my children from pre-grade, through the grades and diplomas and prepared my daughter for competitions including the NI Young Musician Of The Year (which he himself previously won), BBC Young Musician Of The Year, Feis Ceoil in Dublin and many more local competitions. In all cases the judges', many of whom are eminent professional musicians, comments where highly commending of performance, preparation and selection of repertoire. This I have always found to reflect my own impression of his deep and wide knowledge of piano repertoire and technique - enabling appropriate selection of pieces and studies in addition to set works for exams, to suit the individual pupil to develop their full potential. I have much enjoyed watching the progress of my children and have always found him to engage, hold and focus my children's attention in the most amiable and encouraging manner. I can thoroughly recommend him no matter whether you are just starting your piano playing journey or are at an advanced level; young or not so young!"

"I studied the piano with John for almost 10 years and had a fantastic experience! I started as a beginner and finished by achieving my piano diploma. John is a very talented, professional and patient teacher with a deep understanding and genuine passion for music. He offers an excellent level of teaching which focuses on developing technique and precision in piano playing. He uses effective teaching strategies which meet the needs of students and he has a very positive and encouraging attitude. I thoroughly enjoyed my lessons with John as he made the learning process simple, made me feel at ease without fear of making mistakes and helped me to progress each week. I would highly recommend lessons with John to anyone wanting the best quality of teaching and to improve their piano skills!"

"John has been a fantastic teacher to my son over the past 2 years. He is patient, supportive and explains things in an easy to understand way. His calm demeanour really helped my son's pre-exam nerves. He has been genuinely interested in seeing my son progress."

"I would highly recommend John as a Piano teacher!
I started lessons with John after many years of piano playing and tuition in various different spheres. I really wanted to get my Grade 8 piano and had in years past been unsuccessful. I had a genuine love of playing the piano but was crippled with nerves when playing to anyone, which hindered my success with examinations. I had a desire to play in church but nerves and fear prevented me from even doing that. John’s style of teaching not only put me at ease but gave me very practical steps to overcoming nerves. His attention to detail in all aspects of playing allowed me to not only achieve my Grade 8
with Distinction but also to go on to achieve my Diploma. I became part of the church music group- something I never thought possible! I accompany the school choir in competitions but most importantly I now have the confidence to simply play various types of music for enjoyment and relaxation. Whether young, older, starting out or needing further musical assistance I would highly recommend lessons with John."

"When I started taking piano lessons with John, I had some previous piano experience. However, it had been years since I studied and John made it easy to get back into it. John is a very talented pianist with a vast musical knowledge and with his help I was able to reach Grade 6 within two years. John made each lesson very engaging, conducted himself in a professional manner and challenged me to become a better pianist. I would highly recommend John, you’ll not regret it!"

"I’ve had many piano teachers and John is definitely the most talented and creative out there. He is a positive and dedicated teacher, who uses unique techniques to suit his students, no matter what the struggle is. He is always encouraging and patient, qualities that have helped me progress through the grades with optimism and excitement. He makes the lessons fun and there is no doubt that I wouldn’t have been able to complete Grade 8 without him. I couldn’t recommend him enough."
Joshua Jacob
"John lives and breathes music. I remember being blown away by John’s skills on the piano which really motivated me to one day reach that level. He not only helped me fly through Grades 1 to 8, but he also opened my ears to appreciate music (both past and present) on another level. John has a unique ability to see talent potential. He does not give up and will give you the confidence to succeed. Not only is John a great teacher, but he is a lot of a fun as well and I’m proud to say that we still keep in touch to this day - often bantering over our favourite bands! I would 100% recommend John as a teacher, songwriter and inspirer."

"John is a fantastic piano teacher and I would highly recommend him to beginners and more advanced players alike. He taught me from I was a very young beginner and tutored me in both piano and music theory. He was patient, supportive and an overall fantastic tutor."

"John has been my Piano teacher for a number of years now. I have done both Theory of Music exams and Practical Piano exams with John. He is extremely talented and knowledgeable. He makes learning easy and understandable. He is really patient and he takes time to explain things that I might find difficult to understand. Since lockdown I have moved to Skype lessons. At first I was apprehensive about this format of class but it has been a total success. There has been no difference between a classroom setting and online and in some ways it is better as there are now two pianos. John can now show me something on his Piano and then I can repeat it with ease on mine. It has been seamless. I would recommend John without hesitation to anyone looking for quality Piano lessons."

"I studied piano with John for several years prior to attending university to study a music degree. John was always a very attentive and passionate teacher. He dedicated his time to identifying my strengths and weaknesses and encouraged me to find confidence as well as my own unique performance style. While under the tuition of John I completed grades 6-8 and eventually passed the DipABRSM. Our lessons were always a joy and I am grateful to have been taught by such a fantastic teacher who has greatly influenced the pianist I am today."

"I was a late starter on piano – I decided at the age of 56 that I’d like to learn how to play. John was head of the Piano Department in Lisburn School of Music at the time and I was a complete beginner but he was incredibly patient and kind during my lessons. His ability, both on the piano and as a teacher, is second to none, he’s a gifted musician and a wonderful teacher. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending him to anyone wishing to learn piano."

"I first met John in January 2018 at Lisburn School Of Music. I was returning to piano after a 20 year break, and when I played then I was sighted. I am now Blind.
Think again if you are imagining a boring piano teacher from your nightmares as a child. John is constantly thinking ahead, adapting his style of teaching, and it is obvious that he wants to share his love and knowledge of the world of music.
It’s hard to say just how much I appreciate having John to meet up with each week on Zoom. We quickly discovered we are both into some obscure musical genres. Chiptunes anyone? I enjoy that John is a bit geeky about music and general tech.

Returning to music lessons as an adult is very different to when being a young person. John recognises this, and is incredibly flexible and accommodating.
Sometimes we have a lesson were we talk music theory, sometimes a bit of playing, and as John is such a fountain of knowledge I enjoy digging a bit deeper on why music theory says this or that. I find that John's style with me of drip feeding, and encouraging me to ask questions works well. Especially considering when I first started with John I stated I had no interest in theory. Now I enjoy it, and I know as the years roll on this foundation will benefit my playing.
I couldn’t be happier for John now that he has his own music school online. It works out well for him, but it also gives more people the opportunity to learn from this professional and all round good egg! I hope to be a student of Johns for many years to come."
